Hemmingford Road, Cambridge
Project Overview
This townhouse loft conversion was designed to
maintain the character and integrity of the heritage structure while incorporating sleek, contemporary elements.
The goal was to create a spacious, functional living area that blends the traditional aesthetic of the home with modern design principles, culminating in a refined yet comfortable master suite, complete with an ensuite.
Exterior & Roofline
The front external roofline remains true to the
original structure, using natural materials like slate to preserve the period look. The rear dormer was
designed with careful attention to retaining the
original feel with zinc and slate cladding, allowing natural light to flood the interior.
Skylights and dormer windows were added with minimal visibility from the street, ensuring that the heritage style is maintained from an external
viewpoint. A very well designed loft by Raydan Watkins Architects Ltd.
Loft Space Layout
The loft was reimagined as an open-plan retreat with exposed sealed brickwork a nod to the
building’s history, while offering the flexibility of modern living.
The floors are made of dark coloured reclaimed wood, which adds warmth and texture, contrasting beautifully with whitewashed walls that amplify the light entering through new roof windows and loft
bi-folds with glass balcony.
Interior Details & Materials
The heritage style was incorporated through
elements such as paneling, crown molding,
reclaimed floorboards and exposed handmade Cambridge white bricks sealed in the common areas, while the use of modern materials like, glass balcony and brass accents in key spaces enhances the functionality and sleekness of the home.
Functionality
The loft space is optimized for comfort and storage, with built-in beach cupboards and shelving, discreet storage solutions, and ample closet space. The
ensuite bathroom features a heated towel rail, and high-efficiency fixtures to ensure that the home is both energy-efficient and luxurious.
